We have to bring an end to climate change very soon to avert a total catastrophe. We must start to reverse the damage we have done. It is essential that we reverse biodiversity loss too. The consequences of failure are dire indeed.
All the scientific evidence now points at biodiversity loss as a huge problem for our world, up there with climate change.

We have to eat ...
"About Earth and Leaf - we are unusual because we are founded in farming. We have to eat so let's do it sustainably."

Farmers will shape our future ...
"That is it, about Earth and Leaf - The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. Farmers are ideally placed to fix this. This is why we have set up our Shepherds of the Trees program"
Here is a quotation that really sets the scene for our mission:
(from) Earth (a BBC production)
“Now Ive seen so much of the natural world that I cherish destroyed, that it’s difficult not to be pessimistic, but ironically, when I go searching for home, I don’t turn to those planetary forces, I turn to the power of humanity.
Because for all of our flaws, all of our foolishness, we are a truly remarkable species; adaptable, resourceful, inventive, intelligent, creative. And you might argue that our most significant turning points were perhaps standing up on two legs and beginning to walk or drawing those animals on the cave walls, or inventing farming, or even landing on the moon: but I need to argue that these were just our dress rehearsals.
Because in the very near future our species will need to reach the zenith of its’ achievements and that all humanity will have to learn to put our earth first. That unique fragile beautiful earth that for more than four billion years has been forming this stage on which we now stand and it’s waiting for our finest performance. And if we don’t pull it off then of course life on this planet will continue to prosper, but there will be no encore for humanity.”

About Earth and Leaf - our History
Earth and Leaf started with a book, “To Leave Something Behind”. As the book has evolved and publication approaches we have also launched the website www.earthandleaf.org.
“I started writing about agriculture, the environment and global warming as a bit of a hobby. As the book developed I told friends and colleagues. I was a little surprised by their response and encouragement. I was urged to get it finished by an academic colleague. So I started to take it seriously and really enjoyed doing so.
Fast forward a few months and a theme starts to build. One particular idea is forming out of my work. Effectively the project is a vehicle to help upland farmers restore our depleted UK nature and make their farms and equally important their incomes sustainable. That is about Earth and Leaf.”
Iain J Dunn, Founder, Earth and Leaf
