Plans for an industrial scale cattle farm on the edge of a North Staffordshire town are set to be blocked. Dozens of residents are fighting the proposals for three beef rearing units at Westwood Hall Farm in Leek, which together could house hundreds of cows.
Objectors have raised concerns over the noise and odour created by so many animals near people’s homes and schools, along with the impact on local roads. Officers at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council have recommended refusal for all three of the planning applications for the cow sheds, due to them being ‘inappropriate and out of place’.

Westwood Hall Farm is located in the Green Belt between Westwood College and homes off Westwood Park Drive, overlooking the Churnet Valley. One of the proposed buildings would be 555 square metres in size, while the other two would each be 660 square metres.
The original planning statement explained that the intention was to increase the size of the herd at the farm from 380 to up to 800. After concerns were raised over the number of cows, later correspondence says the applicant would be ‘agreeable’ to limiting the herd to 400 to 500.
