The Earth and Leaf Document Library

The Earth and Leaf reference library contains links to a wealth of articles researched from the internet by our staff. Generally they are of serious relevance, occasionally they get in simply because we think they are interesting or even funny. We also add our own editorial comment to each article, explaining its relevance. We always reference our sources, authors and all images.  We would like to thank all these photographers, authors, journalists and researchers for their fantastic work.

Our subject material is scientifically accurate and factually proven. Many subjects are covered, particularly climate change, sustainable agriculture and farming systems. We now know that our planetary biodiversity and our ecosystems are essential to climate stability and we mess around with them at our peril.

The UK itself has some unique challenges such as our upland hill farming systems which require radical overhaul. Politically we have this crazy idea that we must grow all our own food. That is not possible and is also poor use of resources and puts terrible pressure on our wildlife, wetlands and watercourses.

There’s a lot of environmental protection stuff in here too. You will see that we are passionate about habitat rehabilitation. However, rewilding is a term we do not think is acceptable because it implies we are anti farming which is far from the case. Farming does have to change in order for our world to survive and this is covered extensively in the Earth and Leaf blog. This will be driven by absolutely necessary changes in the human diet. Without those changes we cannot halt global warming. Happy reading!

JBS broke its own rules while buying cattle from deforested areas in Pantanal

{Earth and Leaf Editorial – JBS broke its own rules while buying cattle from deforested areas in Pantanal – JBS is the worlds largest meat company and as such is out there with the fossil fuel companies.  We need to remove JBS from the food supply chain unless they are willing to change.  Given that it is prepared to break its own rules that is unlikely to happen.} {extract below} JBS broke its own rules while buying cattle from deforested areas in Pantanal The world’s biggest meat company bought cattle more than 100 times from a farm that was sanctioned and fined nearly $2.5 million for illegally destroying unique and vulnerable wetlands in Brazil, Unearthed can reveal. Indonesia biomass zone for Japan and South Korea energy razes rainforest in Sulawesi

{Earth and Leaf Editorial – Indonesia biomass zone for Japan and S. Korea energy razes rainforest in Sulawesi – As well as fossil fuel use this must be stopped too and must happen now} {extract below}   Indonesia biomass zone for Japan and S. Korea energy razes rainforest in Sulawesi OHUWATO, Indonesia — Heavy trucks roll toward a semiremote coastline here on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island before idling alongside a waiting barge, which will later make a vast shipment of wood pellets to Japan and South Korea. The shipping terminal was built by PT Biomasa Jaya Abadi (BJA), an Indonesian firm with ambitions to become a global leader in the trade of wood pellets, which are increasingly burned alongside coal in...

Industrial wastelands to wildlife oases: The 5 nature wins that have actually worked

{The 5 nature wins that have actually worked – They are: 1. Protect our oceans 2. Fight invasive species 3. Restore degraded wetlands 4. Save keystone species 5. Bring forests back to life Maybe each country should be given just one task, for example Russia to restore the Caspian Sea because it controls the sources of its water, Brazil to end all deforestation and start rehabilitation – Earth and Leaf Editorial} {extract below} Industrial wastelands to wildlife oases: The 5 nature wins that have actually worked World leaders are gathering in Cali, Colombia, to agree ways to save species from extinction and restore nature. The global methane bomb is starting to detonate

{The Global Methane Bomb – if this were to happen our world will become uninhabitable very quickly indeed} {extract below}     The global methane bomb is starting to detonate With each passing year, our own relatively puny emissions are pushing these ancient cycles further out of balance. If they turn against us, the effects could be devastating. For all the damage that humanity is causing through our production of greenhouse gases, the numbers involved can seem impossibly slight. Every year we release about 9.6 billion metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere as CO2, or carbon dioxide – but there’s about 58 trillion tons stored away in organic and fossil matter in the atmosphere, land, and oceans. For decades...

Wales stuck to its guns

{Wales stuck to its guns – This is a really serious part of what we are about at Earth and Leaf.  This action across the Yorkshire Dales National Park would make communities much more sustainable.  A great proposal.  Lets hope that Wales stuck to its guns continues to be the case. – Earth and Leaf Editorial} {extract below} Wales stuck to its guns The Welsh region of Dwyfor has been the site of an unusual experiment in recent months. The area has a high number of second homes, which is pricing young families out of renting and forcing locals hoping to buy out of their hometowns. In 2022, the Welsh Government gave councils the power to charge a second home...

Whats So Great About Sandeels?

{Whats So Great About Sandeels? – Earth and Leaf Editorial} {extract below} Have you ever seen a sandeel? Your initial instinct might be no — but if you’re familiar with Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica), then it’s highly likely that you have. After all, it’s one of their favourite food sources and you’ll often spot these shimmering silver fish in photographs, dangling from a puffin’s flamboyant bill. But it’s not just puffins that enjoy feasting on them. Packed with protein and extremely nutritious, sandeels are preyed upon by a whole host of marine creatures including seabirds like black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) and terns (Sternidae), dolphins and porpoises, and economically important fish including pollack (Pollachius pollachius), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and mackerel...
